![]() ![]() Search is fairly snappy and if you master the advanced search terms, it can unlock hidden gems in the music library. Spotify seems unsure what to do with podcasts, now bundling them into ‘Your library’ and using a filter system to find your subscribed shows, which is awkward at best. Spotify makes frequent changes to its apps, but it feels like the mobile app could do with a complete overhaul. Playing Deezer on a smart speaker won't cut music on your phone Future Publishing via Getty Images Will they buckle? App features and smart speakers What’s more, Apple Music and Amazon’s recent decision to upgrade paying subscribers to lossless audio for free has put pressure on both Spotify and Deezer to follow suit. ![]() So, unless you’re prepared to pay 50% more for Deezer’s HiFi package, there’s not much to choose between the two. Spotify is yet to unleash its high-quality streams, with the service maxing out on 320kbit/sec AAC files for the time being, with lower bitrates available for those keen to save data. Deezer also offers a thin selection of albums in ‘360 Reality Audio’, which is meant to deliver an immersive surround sound for supporting headphones, but is hit and miss in my experience. Sound quality is roughly the same on both services gettyĭeezer’s standard audio quality for paying subscribers is 320kbit/sec MP3 (although that might drop to 128Kbits/sec if you’re streaming on a mobile device and have chosen to save data).ĭeezer does offer a more expensive ‘HiFi’ tier, which offers CD-quality lossless 16-bit FLAC streams delivered at 1,411 Kbits/sec, but that will cost you another $5 (or £5) per month. It’s been a breath of fresh air to switch. Deezer, on the other hand, has exposed me to a lot of fresh artists. If I have one major criticism of Spotify, it’s that the automated music it offers up is very samey, with a lot of track repetition. ‘Flow’ is an infinite mix of favorite and new tracks based on your listening history, and it does daily mixes too, although they’re smaller in number and less well defined than Spotify’s. Discover Weekly is good at unearthing new content, while Release Radar ensures you don’t miss new tracks and albums from your liked artists.ĭeezer has many of the same features, though. The Daily Mix playlists, for example, where Spotify offers you a fresh automated selection of up to six different playlists across different genres are one of the service’s key strengths. Spotify is brilliant at creating those automated playlists filled with songs from artists you love. One reason you might be reluctant to leave Spotify for the sake of a couple of dollars per month is the strength of its music discovery. Overall, then, when it comes to sheer breadth of audio content, it’s a narrow win for Deezer. Over here in the U.K., that includes most of the mainstream stations (the BBC stations, Capital, TalkSport, Virgin, Magic etc) as well as many more niche broadcasters. However, Deezer punches back with something that Spotify doesn’t have at all: live radio streaming. junitxml=xunit. That’s not exactly a killer blow, because you can pick up most podcasts in third-party podcast apps, but it’s a clear win for Spotify.
